Hoi An badly managed & UNESCO failure

Hoi An badly managed & UNESCO failure.

WhatsOrb Global Sustainability X-Change

Hoi An the beautiful heritage town in 20 years from destination with lots of opportunities brought down by badly management and a failure of UNESCO.

Hoi An original is built partly by Chinese and French. Of course Vietnamese added their own part. What an opportunity Vietnam got with Hoi An to make and keep it a 'number 1' tourist destination.
Chinese temple which brings your community an income!
The ironical part is that while hating the Chinese and French because of their part in history in Vietnam , Vietnam can not without it. Imagine demolishing all what is built by the French, Japanese, Chinese, Cham and the Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam would not have a lot of heritage sites.
Somewhere in the 80th the government at that time realized they could make money with it and decided to keep it.
Hating the imperialist, the government started over the years to behave in the same way!  Big government buildings, big 4-wheel cars, big houses. What was in the past a present for certain services got money. First small amounts, later more, later....hundreds of dollars. 100 Dollars got thousand of dollars.
The Japanese Bridge which brings your community an income!

Running a town like Hoi An where million of tourists come need a strong management team with knowledge and common sense. Not some amateurs who have no idea about what they do.
Why does Danang not take over where people have proven how to run a city, built a great infrastructure and give you the feeling they are willing to make some good out of it? Why does Hanoi don't step in and stop the destruction of Hoi An and take it away from Tam Ky?

Another part of Hoi An what the government got for free and destroyed is the beach! A beautiful beach which is turned into a disaster zone the last 15 years. Sure erosion is a world wide problem and appears naturally. But you can amplify this process by: building hydro electric dams, bulldoze away dunes, cut all the trees, reroute rivers, fill up a river mouth, built to close to the shore line and built vertical concrete walls.Knowing this problem would arise by building hydro electric dams one choose just to go on!
French architecture which brings your community an income!

You can't expect a town having not a waste water treatment system while having millions of guests and thinking that will be ok. You can't give unlimited licenses to shops, restaurants, spa's, hotels, home-stays etc and thinking it will go all ok! It's ok for some 'big pockets' who are in charge without thinking about the negative impact on society!

There are so many people fed up with the local government you can expect as a start that people will pull out and invest somewhere else. It's happening already. Why would you invest in Hoi An and getting badly treated year after year.
Cham architecture which brings your community an income!
It were the foreign visitors who brought prosperity to Hoi An. Foreign investors brought employment, have been teaching locals, had the connections with foreign tour operators.
On any level these people got cheated, robbed, mistreated, put under pressure, asked for more papers, more stamps, more money in case of buying land, renting houses, building houses, getting licensees, getting stock, getting visa, getting....! And the same for tourists which also now get grabbed by hundreds of street-sellers and desperate staff from businesses!
This all is in your own newspapers. These national problems are all talked over many times in the NA and whats done after all these years?
A free beach which brings your community an income!

And what about UNESCO?

Why put any site on the UNESCO 'map' without forcing local governments to prepare for mass tourism. Hoi An is not the first destination going under at it's own 'success'! Should local governments not be forced to improve their infrastructure to receive all these millions of people.
And anyway why would you as an organization 'reward' sites, towns, relics to be a UNESCO site? Whats behind this organization working under the umbrella of the UN? What do they gain?
It brought Hoi An a short time of prosperity which now ends up in a mass tourism nightmare!
What does it mean that UNESCO wants the promotion of cultural diversity, international cooperation agreements to secure the world cultural and national heritage?
UNESCO's aim is to contribute to sustainable development! Where can I find this in
Hoi An?
Just writing 'the effects of tourism on culture en the environment is a little to late!
'Mustard after dinner!'

60 Speedboats will bring you to Cham Island!
Hoi An, Quang Nam, Vietnam has to many empty phrases. No deeds! At least you would expect from officials who are so proud about the tourist numbers they could speak English. The police for example in case of an emergency, etc.! None! A clear message;
' we are not interested in you!'
With all the money coming in from ticket sales and tax there is not enough money to preserve this beautiful relics, heritage buildings, the Cham heritage site in My Son! Where does all the money go? Already years ago we can read the same message again and again!

All we can conclude is that Hoi An is only interested in money which goes in a wrong direction, goes for cheap and at most mediocre and has no respect for it's visitors, foreign investors and even their own people. If you start running discotheque & bars opposite the old quarter and allow them to produce so much noise that other businesses have to close, and locals can not sleep than you have no heart!

And when the last tourist closes the door, you will say:'I got my share, who cares about the rest'! This is the impression what last with the people who came to visit your 'beautiful' town!
